San Jose Musical Theater 

Announces Auditions for:

Buddy: the Buddy Holly Story

By Alan Janes

Directed by Mark Drumm

Music Direction by David Herberg

Producer Lucy Haab

Audition Dates: March 14 and 15th at 7 - 9:30pm

Location: Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 1281 Redmond Ave. San Jose CA

Performances: June 9th - 25th

Location: Hammer Theater in downtown San Jose

The play follows the rise to fame and untimely death of Buddy Holly.

Cast:

Buddy Holly (20s- Baritone/Tenor - must play rock and roll lead/rhythm guitar) - Carries the show with his talent and energy. MUST play rock guitar and sing/move and act like Buddy Holly

Jerry Allison (20s - backup vocalist and double bass player) - In many scenes but very few lines. MUST play rock bass and who can entertain while playing.

Joe B. Maudlin (20s - backup vocalist and drummer) - Also in many scenes but with very few lines. MUST play rock drums

Tommy (the 4th Cricket - 20s) - MUST play rhythm/lead guitar. 

Hipockets (30+ male - non-singing part) - Narrator of the show, a DJ/manager/friend of Buddy’s 

Apollo Singer (Black female - 25+ - solo song) Charms the Apollo audience with her talent.

Apollo Performers (Black males - 25+ - backup singers) Not sure what to make of Buddy and the Crickets as they are about to play in Harlem. Good comic timing.

The Big Bopper (30s - Baritone - sings hit song “Chantilly Lace”) - Big presence. MUST do a good job impersonating The Big Bopper.

Ritchie Valens (20s - Hispanic -  Baritone/tenor - sings hit song “La Bamba”) - Full of fire and personality.

Maria Elena (20s - Hispanic - non-singing part) - Buddy Holly’s wife

Norman Petty (25+ non-singing part) - Record producer who works with Buddy and the Crickets.

Vi Petty (20s non-singing part - would be great if plays piano) - Works at the record studio and plays piano on several songs.

5-6 back-up singers

Many small non-singing parts

Bring Headshot, resume and  sheet music in your key for a Rock (or Rock Broadway) song. Please bring your instrument if you are interested in a role that plays an instrument. 

Bring conflict calendar for March - June.
